The British Sign Language Course introduces students to BSL and helps them to become fluent enough to use it in basic, everyday conversation. As well as understanding the practical aspects of vocabulary and grammar, this course also gives students a more thorough knowledge with additional topics covered, such as the origins of British Sign Language, how it is used (not solely as a form of communication the hearing and speech impaired), and the grammatical structure of the British Sign Language, called the Topic Comment Structure and how it differs from its spoken counterpart. By the end of the course you will have a good understanding of BSL and be in a great place to pursue British Sign Language further and develop further proficiency in it.
What You'll Learn from the British Sign Language Course
The course starts with a thorough introduction to British Sign Language and its uses, as well as describing its history and development, as well as comparing it with other sign languages; explaining the advantages of BSL.
Sign language is often considered to be used exclusively in communication with the hearing and speech impaired; this misconception is cleared up in the second module of the British Sign Language Course, which encourages people to study it and use how they wish to use it. The rest of this module sets students up to study the course, with information on what they will need to study effectively, pointers to get the most from the course, and how to schedule time for study and practice.
Module 3 of the BSL Course introduces the basics, with common greetings and signs for friends and family members covered. Details of the correct hand movements and visual cues to use are given, to give a better understanding of how to replicate the signs.
In module 4 students learn how to count from 1 to 100 in BSL and then move onto how to sign quantities.
A favourite among many of us, food and drink is the topic being taught in the fifth module of the British Sign Language Course. The module starts by explaining signs used to represent food and then moves onto drink. With those areas covered the module concludes by explaining how dinner conversation may be made with BSL.
Being a course in British Sign Language, module 6 covers the great British pastime of discussing the weather.
BSL is an emotive language, and the seventh module of the course discusses how to express feelings with sign language and how it can be used to have full and complete conversations, as well as how to assess the feeling of another person by recognising expressions and body language.
Giving students even more complex tools in their study of the BSL, the eight module explains signs that are used to describe people, their characteristics and personalities, and how to make comparisons between people.
The ninth module of the British Sign Language Course covers a number of useful signs for a variety of scenarios. Covered here are signs for the work environment in general and various jobs in particular, everyday objects, time-telling, including increments of time, and dates, days of the week and months.
Module 10 of the course is dedicated to the important area of grammar. The differences between grammar in sign language compared with spoken languages are explained, along with the actual grammar rules used in BSL, relating to plurality, questions, tenses and qualities.
The last module of the course summarises all that has been learned, to provide revision and to ensure understanding and enable students to highlight areas that they may need to revisit.
Who Would Benefit from the Course?
The course will help those who work with the public or in career roles, where they may come in contact with BSL users, and for those who are considering a career in British Sign Language Interpretation but would like to understand the topic further before committing to a more financially and time-demanding course.
